Vehicle Insurance
Most drivers are aware that they need auto insurance. It’s a requirement in most states. But how much coverage should you carry? Do you need comprehensive coverage or liability insurance? What about collision coverage, or Rental Reimbursement?
Why do you need vehicle insurance?
It’s really all about minimizing your exposure to financial risks. Besides financial risk, many states mandate to have some level of coverage. Financial risk can be of one or more of the following:
If you’re in an accident or your car is stolen, it costs money to fix or replace it.
If you or any passengers are injured in an accident, medical costs can be expensive.
If you or your car is responsible for damage or injury to others, you may be sued for much more than you’re worth.
Auto insurance policy generally include following coverage. Each coverage is priced separately.
Bodily Injury (BI) Liability
This coverage applies to injuries that you, the designated driver or policyholder, cause to someone else. You and family members listed on the policy are also covered when driving someone else’s automobile with their permission.
It’s very important to have enough liability insurance, because if you are involved in a serious accident, you may be sued for a large sum of money. We recommend you to consider buying more than the state-required minimum to protect assets such as your home and savings. Amount of coverage you buy are also called Limits. Typical BI limits could be $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident.
Property Damage (PD) Liability
This coverage pays for damage you (or someone driving the automobile with your permission) may cause to someone else’s property. Usually, this means damage to someone else’s automobile, but it also includes damage to non-automobile such as lamp posts, telephone poles, fences, buildings or other structures your automobile hit.
Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
This coverage pays for the treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s automobile. At its broadest, PIP can cover medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs. It is often called “no-fault” coverage because the coverage are paid out regardless of who is at fault. PIP laws differ from state to state in terms of mandatory coverage and coverage limits. PIP can work together with your health insurance, and it can help cover things that aren’t included in all health plans. For example, if you have Medicare or Medicaid, medical expenses related to a car accident may not be covered. We can help you these coverage specific to your situation depending on the state you live in.
Collision
This coverage pays for damage to your automobile resulting from a collision with another automobile, object or as a result of flipping over. It also covers damage caused by potholes. Collision coverage is generally sold with a deductible of $250 to $1,000—the higher your deductible, the lower your premium. Even if you are at fault for the accident, your collision coverage will reimburse you for the costs of repairing your car, minus the deductible. If you’re not at fault, your insurance company may try to recover the amount they paid you from the other driver’s insurance company. If they are successful, you’ll also be reimbursed for the deductible.
Comprehensive
This coverage reimburses you for loss due to theft or damage caused by something other than a collision with another automobile or object, such as fire, falling objects, missiles, explosion, earthquake, windstorm, hail, flood, vandalism, riot, or contact with animals such as birds or deer.
Comprehensive coverage is generally sold with a deductible of $250 to $1,000—the higher your deductible, the lower your premium. Comprehensive insurance will also reimburse you if your windshield is cracked or shattered. Some companies offer glass coverage with or without a deductible.
Uninsured and Under-insured Motorist Coverage
This coverage will reimburse you, a member of your family, or a designated driver if one of you is hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver.
Under insured motorist coverage comes into play when an at-fault driver has insufficient insurance to pay for your total loss. This coverage will also protect you if you are hit as a pedestrian.
Other Coverage:
Rental Car Coverage: While your automobile in repair shop, you will be reimbursed with rental charges, typically $25 per day and up to maximum of $600 per incident
Emergency Road Service Coverage: Road side assistance such as flat tire, towing service, running out of gas, etc.
